Rerun

What did I do today?

What did I do this morning? Did I already take my tablets? Who rang yesterday, and what did they say? Rerun is for when you can't rely on your memory to tell you.

Rerun's Today screen. A photo of parking bay 3·C14, 'This is where I parked', from tonight. 'Took my evening tablets' and a recording, both from this evening, an hour ago.

Who it's for

People who can't rely on their own recall, and the people who look after them.

  • ADHD
  • Brain fog: long COVID, chemo, medication
  • Concussion and head injury
  • Early memory decline
  • Carers

You write things down as they happen, or say them, or take a photo. Later, when you're not sure what happened, you open Rerun and it shows you. That is all it does.

Where it came from

The timeline my mother was building

My mother had an old Nokia. When a back problem left her bedridden at 72, she began calling friends and relatives at odd hours.

Only after she was diagnosed with early dementia did I understand why. She had been using the phone's recent-calls list to keep track of her day, and when a stretch of time had nothing on it, she made a call to put something there.

Rerun is the timeline she was building, one that doesn't need anyone to pick up.

What you see

Three things. Nothing else to learn.

Today

The last three days, every entry open. Each one says when it happened in plain words, like "This afternoon · about 3 hours ago".

Add

One button, one place to write. The camera and the microphone are in the same place.

Find

Everything you have ever written. Type a word, or jump to a date.

Ways in without opening the app

Put it down in a few seconds, then carry on

  • The Add widget on your home screen.
  • The Today widget shows how many entries today and the latest one, with buttons to write, take a photo or record sound.
  • Share text, links, photos and audio into Rerun from any other app.
  • Hold the app icon for Add, Photo, Record sound and Find.

Once you've saved, each of these puts you back where you were.

Make it a habit

A day you miss costs nothing

Rerun works best as a habit: put things in as they happen, and look back over the day before bed. Writing something down and seeing it again later helps it stick.

There are no streaks and no reminders. If you miss a day, just pick it up again.

What it will never do

No noise, and nothing to decide

  • No notifications. It will never remind you, nag you or count a streak.
  • No account and no sign-in.
  • No server.Your entries stay on the phone unless you back them up or share them.
  • No moods to rate, no tags to pick, no forms. You just write.
  • No ads.

Private

It stays on your phone

Your notes, photos and recordings are kept in Rerun's private storage on your phone, which Android protects with the phone's own encryption and screen lock. Photos and recordings you take in Rerun don't go into your gallery. Anything you share in is copied, and the original stays where it was.

You can lock Rerun with your phone's own screen lock: the fingerprint, face, PIN or pattern you already use, so there is nothing new to remember. Backups go to a folder you choose, such as one in Google Drive. A backup is as private as the folder it's in. There is no backup password to remember, or to forget. Works with large text, in light or dark.

What the app won't tell you

Rerun has no tour to click through. A new journal's first screen says what Add, Today and Find are for, and a help page is one tap away in Settings. What it won't point out is the shortcuts, so:

  1. Put the Add widget or the Today widget on their home screen.
  2. Choose a backup folder in Settings (the gear at the top of Today), in Google Drive if they use it. Rerun asks about this only once, after it has been in use for a while, so it's worth doing on the first day.
  3. Write the first entry together.

Free

Every feature, for everyone, for good

There is no trial, no limit and no premium version. If Rerun helps you, there are optional tips under About in Settings. They unlock nothing.
